Can't wait to get growing and eating your own? Try sprouts NOW! Inside. Need little space. Short time. Really nutritious. Super easy.

Good how-to info:

http://www.real-foods.net/grow-sprouts.html

By growing your own sprouts, you will save yourself money because it is less expensive to buy sprout seeds and grow and harvest the sprouts yourself, than it is to buy the sprouts from a market. Sprouting at home takes only a few minutes a day, and can produce a good part of your daily requirements of the nutrients you need from fresh produce. The hassles are minor, the costs are low, and the freshness is wonderful.

Information on nutrition:

Yes, it is fast food, but you won't be sacrificing any nutrition. Alfalfa sprouts have more chlorophyll than spinach, kale, cabbage or parsley. Alfalfa, sunflower, clover and radish sprouts are all 4% Protein. Compare that to spinach - 3%, Romaine lettuce -1.5% and Iceberg lettuce- 0.8%, and milk -3.3%. These foods all have about 90% water. But meat and eggs are the protein foods for Americans. Meat is 19% and eggs are 13% protein (and 11% fat). But Soybean sprouts have 28% protein, and lentil and pea sprouts are 26%. Soybeans sprouts have twice the protein of eggs and only 1/10 fat the fat.

Where to find seeds to sprout? A 5 lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds (bird seed!) cost about $4.99 at Kellers IGA. Plenty of seed for you and the birds. Be sure to follow the rinsing instructions at the site above.

P.s. Want sunflowers in your garden this year? Plant black oil sunflower seeds (same as above). No kidding. Just toss a handful approximately where you want them, scratch your rake or hand over them to cover them with soil a bit. Step on them to compact the soil. Sprinkle with the hose and... boom! Masses of sunflowers. (Great as a companion planting for veggies affected by aphids. The sunflowers will attract the aphids without being damaged by them.)
